Bihar from Patna
Buddhist heritage, ancient universities and sacred towns, most of them a comfortable drive from Patna.
Overview
Bihar is where the Buddha attained enlightenment, where Mahavira lived and taught, and where one of the world's oldest universities stood. For a traveller starting in Patna, most of these places are two to four hours away by road, which makes Bihar ideal for day trips and short circuits.
The classic route is the Buddhist circuit: Patna – Nalanda – Rajgir – Bodh Gaya. It can be done in two or three days at an easy pace. Vaishali is a separate half-day or full-day trip to the north of Patna.
How to reach
- By air: Jay Prakash Narayan Airport in Patna is the main gateway. Gaya also has an airport, close to Bodh Gaya.
- By train: Patna Junction, Rajendra Nagar Terminal, Patliputra Junction and Danapur connect Patna to most major cities.
- By road: a private cab from Patna is the most practical way to cover Nalanda, Rajgir, Bodh Gaya and Vaishali, because the sites are spread out and local transport between them is limited.
Best time to visit
October to March is the most comfortable season, with cool mornings and pleasant days. April to June is hot, so start early and keep afternoons light. The monsoon (July to September) brings greenery but also rain delays.
Some trips are planned around events: Pitru Paksha in Gaya (around September), Chhath Puja (October or November), the Sonepur Mela (around Kartik Purnima) and the Rajgir Mahotsav in winter. Dates change every year, so check before you plan.
