Overview
Jharkhand lies to the south of Bihar and offers a very different landscape: forested hills, waterfalls and plateau towns. For travellers from Patna it has two main draws. The first is pilgrimage, led by Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and the Jain shrine at Parasnath (Shikharji). The second is nature: the waterfalls around Ranchi and the sunrise and sunset points of Netarhat.
How to reach
- By road: Deoghar and Ranchi are both reached from Patna by highway. These are long drives, so most travellers book a round trip cab for two days or more.
- By train: Jasidih is the railhead for Deoghar. Ranchi and Hatia serve Ranchi.
- By air: Ranchi (Birsa Munda Airport) and Deoghar have airports.
Best time to visit
October to March is the best time for sightseeing. The waterfalls around Ranchi are at their fullest just after the monsoon, from September to November.
Deoghar is busiest during the Shravani Mela in the month of Sawan (July and August), when lakhs of kanwariyas arrive. Darshan takes much longer in this period, so plan extra time or choose other months for a calmer visit.

Can I do Patna to Deoghar and back in one day?
It is possible but tiring, since the drive is six to seven hours each way. Most families stay one night in Deoghar and return the next day after darshan.
