October to March is the best season. Winter mornings on the ghats can be foggy, so keep buffer time for road travel in December and January.
Festivals bring very large crowds: Dev Deepawali in Varanasi (around November), Ram Navami and Deepotsav in Ayodhya, and the Magh Mela in Prayagraj (January and February). Book vehicles and rooms early for these dates.
