Patna to Bodh Gaya by Road: Route, Travel Time and What to See

Bodh Gaya is the place where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree and became the Buddha. It is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in the world, and it is close enough to Patna for a day trip.

Distance and travel time

Bodh Gaya is roughly 115 km from Patna, and the drive usually takes 3 to 3.5 hours by car. The time varies with traffic leaving Patna and road conditions on the day. Gaya city is about 15 km before Bodh Gaya.

Best time to leave Patna

Leave early, around 6 am. You get out of the city before traffic builds, reach Bodh Gaya by mid-morning and have the whole day there. For a day trip, start back by 4 or 5 pm so that most of the return drive is in daylight.

What to see in Bodh Gaya

  • Mahabodhi Temple: a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of the town. Give it at least an hour and a half. Mobile phones are not allowed inside the complex and must be deposited at the counter, so plan for that.
  • The Bodhi Tree: behind the main temple, where pilgrims sit in meditation.
  • Great Buddha Statue: a tall seated Buddha in an open garden, a short drive from the temple.
  • Monasteries of different countries: Thai, Japanese, Bhutanese, Tibetan and others, each built in its own style. Many close for a few hours at midday.

Adding Gaya

Hindu pilgrims often combine the trip with Vishnupad Temple in Gaya, on the bank of the Falgu river. Families visiting for pind daan should keep a separate half day or full day for the rituals, especially during Pitru Paksha when the town is very crowded.

One day or two?

  • One day: Patna – Bodh Gaya – Patna works well if Bodh Gaya is your only stop.
  • Two days: stay a night and add Rajgir and Nalanda on the way back. This is the classic Buddhist circuit and it is far more relaxed than trying to cover everything in one day.

Best season

October to March is the most comfortable time. Winter is also when Buddhist prayer festivals bring many monks and international pilgrims to the town, so hotels fill early. Summer afternoons are very hot; if you travel then, finish the temple visit in the morning.

Which vehicle to book

  • A sedan is fine for two to four people on this route.
  • Families with elders or more luggage are more comfortable in an SUV or MUV.
  • Groups should book a tempo traveller so that everyone travels together.

A round trip cab is the right choice for a day trip or a two-day circuit, because you need the car between the sites. If you are flying out of Gaya or staying on, ask for a one way cab.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Bodh Gaya from Patna?

About 115 km by road. The drive usually takes 3 to 3.5 hours by car, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Can I visit Bodh Gaya and return to Patna the same day?

Yes. Leave Patna early in the morning and start back by late afternoon. It is a comfortable day trip.

Can Rajgir and Nalanda be added to a Bodh Gaya trip?

Yes, but plan two days with a night halt. Covering all three in one day leaves too little time at each place.
