Rajgir and Nalanda in One Day from Patna: A Practical Itinerary

Rajgir and Nalanda are the most popular day trip from Patna, and for good reason. In one day you can walk through the ruins of an ancient university, ride a ropeway to a hilltop stupa and be home for dinner. The two towns are only about 15 km apart, so they fit naturally into one outing.
The route
Patna to Nalanda is roughly 85 km, and Rajgir is about 100 km from Patna. Expect 2 to 3 hours of driving each way, depending on traffic and road conditions. Most travellers visit Nalanda first and Rajgir after, or the reverse if they want the ropeway before the queue builds.
A workable schedule
- 6:00 am Leave Patna. Carry breakfast or stop on the highway.
- 8:30 am Reach Nalanda. Visit the excavated ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A licensed guide at the gate makes the red-brick monasteries and temples much easier to understand. Allow 1.5 hours.
- 10:00 am Nalanda Archaeological Museum, opposite the ruins. It is usually closed on Fridays, so check before you plan.
- 11:00 am Drive to Rajgir (about 30 minutes).
- 11:30 am Ropeway to the Vishwa Shanti Stupa on Ratnagiri hill. This is where the longest wait can be on weekends and holidays.
- 1:30 pm Lunch in Rajgir.
- 2:30 pm Choose two or three of these: the hot springs at Brahma Kund, Venu Van, the cyclopean wall, Bimbisara's jail site, or Ghora Katora lake.
- 4:30 pm Start back for Patna.
- 7:30 pm Reach Patna.
The nature safari and glass bridge
Rajgir's nature safari, with its glass bridge and zoo safari, is very popular and takes several hours on its own. Tickets are limited and often need to be booked in advance. If this is your main reason to visit, give it most of the day and keep Nalanda short, or stay overnight.
Tips that save time
- Start early. An hour's delay in the morning costs you a site in the evening.
- Weekdays are quieter than weekends for the ropeway.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Nalanda involves a lot of walking in open sun.
- Carry water, caps and some cash for entry tickets and parking.
- With small children or elders, skip one afternoon stop instead of rushing.
Best time to go
October to March is ideal. In summer, do the walking at Nalanda as early as possible and keep the afternoon light.
Which cab to book
Book a round trip cab for the day so the car stays with you between sites. A sedan is enough for up to four people. For a bigger family choose an SUV or MUV, and for a group, a tempo traveller.
